Yes, in most cases, acquiring a foreign citizenship will result in the automatic loss of Austrian citizenship according to § 27 of the Austrian Citizenship Act. This applies if you actively apply for and acquire another nationality without prior official permission to retain your Austrian citizenship. However, exceptions exist. You may be allowed to keep Austrian citizenship if you apply for and receive a formal approval in advance (called a “Beibehaltung”) under § 28 StbG. This is typically granted only if the retention of Austrian citizenship is considered to be in the special interest of the Republic of Austria. Austrian citizens who acquire another nationality without this prior approval generally lose their Austrian citizenship automatically by operation of law (ex lege).
