Yes, under certain conditions, children can retain Austrian citizenship even if they acquire another nationality. According to Austrian citizenship law, minors who automatically acquire a foreign citizenship at birth (e.g. through a foreign parent) do not lose their Austrian citizenship. Dual citizenship is tolerated in these cases. However, if Austrian children actively acquire a second citizenship later in life (e.g. by naturalization in another country), they may lose their Austrian citizenship unless they receive prior permission to retain it. This requires a formal application for retention before the acquisition of the foreign nationality (§ 28 StbG). Each case is assessed individually, and legal advice is strongly recommended, especially when planning to obtain another nationality for your child.
