In most cases, Austrian citizenship law requires applicants to renounce their previous citizenship before obtaining Austrian nationality. However, exceptions exist. You may be allowed to retain your existing citizenship if the retention is in the interest of the Republic of Austria. This applies particularly to individuals with exceptional achievements, such as prominent academics, business leaders, athletes, or those with strong ties and contributions to Austria. Each case is subject to individual review and requires a formal application for permission to retain the existing nationality. Dual citizenship is more likely to be approved if you can demonstrate that your continued foreign citizenship is of significant benefit to Austria.
